The Patriarch Samuel Nitschke was born on the 20th of October 1794 in Zullichau, Brandenburg, Prussia. In 1838 at age 44 he boarded a sailing ship called The Zebra with his family in Hamburg bound for Australia to begin their new life. The Journey must have been arduous leaving in mid German winter in freezing conditions and arriving in the heat of Australian summer. Samuel and his wife Elizabeth travelled with their 11 children aged between 1 – 21 years.
In the late 1830’s Samuel chose a picturesque patch of undulating land on the banks of Jacobs Creek and named it Moorooroo Park where he planted vineyards and orchards, built several stone buildings, a slaughter house and smokehouse.
Samuel and Elizabeth’s 6th child Eleanore married Johann Gramp and went on to plant vineyards opposite her family home on the edge of Jacobs Creek and became the matriarch of the Orlando Empire.
Moorooroo Park Vineyards and Jacobs Creek Retreat today are co-located on this historic property. Enhanced by current custodians Wyndham and Patricia House for the past 20 years, the property is open for your enjoyment both botanical and viticultural.
